SpywareBlaster used to prevent only those malicious attacks that were ActiveX-based; now it has expanded, and has the ability to block all types of malware usually met through a Web browser. Unfortunately it is mostly useful for Internet Explorer than for other web browsers.
You can block flash media, make encrypted backups of the Hosts file, block cookies, build customized ActiveX blocks, or create a personal and universal blacklist that works with multiple web browsers. Additionally, you can create a system snapshot for recovery in case of attack.
Automatic definitions are now available in this version, which itself now even works under Windows 7. Unfortunately this current version doesn't look very well as compared to other security products that are better in preventing attacks and removing infections.
Even though for Firefox and Netscape it only offers cookie blocking, it is still a good choice since it's free and stays running only in the background. It works without issues with other programs and applications on the computer that help secure Windows systems.
Strangely, it still supports Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 too - which is actually rare nowadays. |
